To advance the development of international Chinese language education and strengthen students’ cross-cultural teaching skills, Xu Mengting and Lin Zhiling—two students from the 2024 cohort of the International Chinese Language Education program in the School of Sociology and Humanities—have embarked on a four-month Chinese teaching internship at Universitas Bunda Mulia in Indonesia. This overseas internship program represents a successful initiative by JUFE to advance the development of its International Chinese Language Education program and cultivate talent with global competence. As one of Indonesia’s top 50 universities, Universitas Cipta Mandiri has an internationally recognized quality management system and offers an excellent learning environment and a diverse cultural atmosphere.

During their internship, students Xu Mengting and Lin Zhiling immersed themselves in the International Chinese Education program at Universitas Cipta Mandiri, where they taught listening and speaking, reading, writing, and cultural courses. They participated in and organized campus cultural activities, applying the professional theoretical knowledge they had acquired in China to their overseas practice. They explored teaching methods tailored to Indonesian students while showcasing the unique charm of Chinese culture to Indonesian faculty and students through cultural activities such as face painting, calligraphy, and traditional festivals.

For example, when the winter solstice arrived, Bunda Mulia University held a cultural event themed Welcoming the Winter Solstice Making Tangyuan. The two students were invited to explain Chinas winter solstice traditions to Indonesian students and, together with the Culinary Arts Department of Bunda Mulia University, led an engaging tangyuan-making activity. The Indonesian students not only diligently learned the traditional techniques of making tangyuan but also infused the process with their own creativity and imagination.

During this enriching overseas internship, the two students gained valuable insights into the role of international Chinese language teachers. They not only sharpened their teaching skills but also strengthened their cross-cultural communication abilities, laying a solid foundation for their future studies, life, and career.
