I. Overview

The School of Statistics was built on the foundation of the Department of Accounting and Statistics of Jiangxi Provincial Business School founded in 1923. Along with its traditional advantages, the program of Statistics boasts a complete discipline platform that integrates bachelor’s, master’s (including professional master’s) and doctoral programs as well as postdoctoral research station. Quantitative Economics, as a sub-discipline of Applied Economics, boasts a discipline platform combining a master’s program, doctoral program, and postdoctoral research station.

The school consists of five teaching departments including the Department of Economic Statistics, the Department of Financial Statistics, the Department of Mathematical Statistics, the Department of Management Statistics, and the Department of Quantitative Economics, one Research Institute of Statistics and Risk Management, one Research Institute of Quantitative Economics, one Office of Times Research, one Jiangxi Applied Statistics Research Center(Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences in Jiangxi Colleges and Universities), one Jiangxi Economic Forecasting and Decision-making Research Center (Key Research Base of Philosophy and Social Sciences in Jiangxi Province), and one Supply Chain Big Data Research Center (jointly built with the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing). The school has invited Professor Qiu Dong, a famous statistician and Chang Jiang Scholar, as honorary dean.

 

II. Faculty

       With a history of more than 30 years of running undergraduate programs, the school boasts a large number of professional teachers, highly qualified in both teaching skill and moral integrity. The school employs 79 faculty members with 67 full-time teachers. Among these full-time teachers, there are 21 doctoral supervisors, 17 professors, 18 associate professors, 57 teachers with doctorates, 2 chair professors honored as Chang Jiang Scholars, 4 foreign academic leaders, 1 expert enjoying the special government allowances of the State Council, 1 judge of the National Social Science Foundation of China, 1 member of the Teaching Guidance Committee in Economics of the Ministry of Education, 1 member of the New Century Excellent Talents Support Program of the Ministry of Education, 1 candidate of the National Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project, 1 member of the Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions to the Country, 2 teachers enjoying the special allowances of the People’s Government of Jiangxi Province and 2 teachers of the Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project in Jiangxi Province. The proportion of teachers with senior titles reaches 56.45%, and that of doctors is 91.93%. More than 60% of teachers with doctoral degrees obtained their doctorates in national key universities of the “985 Project”, five in the United States, Australia and Singapore, and two through the co-cultivation of China and the US funded by the China Scholarship Council.

2. Introduction of Programs

Economic Statistics

1. History

Established in 1958, Economic Statistics has a long history as a traditional dominant major in Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics and has won the titles of “Brand Major” of Jiangxi colleges and universities, key discipline of Jiangxi colleges and universities, pilot program of comprehensive reform of Jiangxi colleges and universities, and first-class specialty major of Jiangxi colleges and universities, due to its outstanding achievements. With a sound discipline system, it owns the postdoctoral research station of Statistics, the doctoral and master’s programs of the first-level discipline of Statistics, the doctoral and master’s programs of the second-level discipline of Quantitative Economics, and the master’s program of Applied Statistics. In 2015, the program of Economic Statistics ranked fifth in China.

2. Talent Cultivation Goals

In terms of the direction of data engineering affiliated with economic statistics, the school aims to train application-oriented talents in big data who have the abilities of collection, processing, and in-depth analysis and possess the professional knowledge of statistics, computer science, and economic management. In terms of the direction of financial statistics affiliated with economic statistics, the school aims to cultivate entrepreneurial talents who have an all-round development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, and aesthetics, master the basic theories, knowledge, and skills of statistics and financial insurance, are able to carry out financial management, securities investment analysis, insurance management, and actuarial work in relevant decision-making institutions of finance, securities, and insurance and government departments by using statistical econometric analysis methods, and have the qualities of honesty, excellence, integrity, and perseverance. Focusing on the integration of statistics, mathematics, and economics, the top talents experimental class in economic statistics aims to train innovative talents who possess solid theories of statistics, mathematics, and economics, are proficient in the operation of the world's mainstream statistical software, are skilled at programming and data analysis, and are adept in applying statistical methods and data mining technology to solve practical economic and social problems.

3. Talent Cultivation Features

The school highlights the distinct feature of big data analysis in cultivating students majoring in data engineering of economic statistics. It highlights the characteristic of statistical econometric analysis of financial sectors including finance, securities, and insurance in cultivating students majoring in financial statistics of economic statistics, and the striking features of “solid foundation, broad vision, and comprehensive quality” in the top talents experimental class of economic statistics.

4. Length of Schooling and Awarding of Degrees

The standard length of schooling for economic statistics is four years, with a flexible learning period of 4-6 years. Students who complete the required credits and meet the graduation requirements shall be issued a diploma. Those who meet the degree requirements shall be awarded a bachelor's degree in economics.

Applied Statistics

1. History

On the basis of the program of Economic Statistics, the school added Applied Statistics in 2012.

2. Talent Cultivation Goals

The school highlights the characteristics of “solid foundation, broad vision, and comprehensive quality” and aims to cultivate versatile, innovative, and entrepreneurial talents who have an all-round development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, and aesthetics, have a good mastery of the basic theories of mathematics, statistics, and finance, are proficient in the operation of the world's mainstream statistical software, are good at applied statistical methods and data mining technology, are able to carry out financial management, securities investment analysis, insurance management, and actuarial work in relevant decision-making institutions of finance and securities, as well as insurance and government departments, and have the qualities of Honesty, Vitality, Integrity, and Tenacity”.

3. Talent Cultivation Features

After long-term exploration and practice, the school has gradually formed a unique application-oriented talent training mode of “three linkages, three processes, and three supports” (linkages of classroom, campus, and society; processes of learning methods, applying methods, and innovating methods; supports of basic theoretical education platform, practice drilling platform, and innovative research platform).

4. Length of Schooling and Awarding of Degrees

The standard length of schooling for undergraduates is four years, with a flexible learning period of 3-6 years. Students who complete the required credits and meet the graduation requirements shall be issued a diploma. Those who meet the degree requirements shall be awarded a bachelor's degree in science.

Actuarial Science

1. History

Based on a large number of investigations and the full attestation of experts, the school established the program of Actuarial Science in 2018.

2. Talent Cultivation Goals

This program aims to cultivate professionals in actuarial work and risk management who have a solid mathematical foundation and basic knowledge of statistics, economics, insurance, and finance, are proficient in the theories, methods, and skills of actuarial science and modern risk management, are able to engage in risk management, insurance pricing, actuarial analysis, investment and financial management, asset evaluation, solvency supervision, and other work in insurance companies, banks, securities organizations, investment companies, enterprises, and public institutions, and have the qualities of honesty, excellence, integrity, and perseverance. The school encourages students to take part in the examination of the Society of Actuaries in the USA or the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in the UK while studying professional courses, and to pass a number of qualification examinations during their college period, so as to lay the groundwork for those who want to engage in the actuarial field in the future.

The school not only pays attention to the professional knowledge of insurance, risk management, and actuarial science, but also the practical and applied abilities. Taking professional quality and ability training as the core, the school aims to improve the curriculum system, develop students' practical and work abilities, and achieve a balance between talent training and the needs of the employers.

IV. Talent Cultivation Achievements

1. Joint Talent Cultivation Projects

Through various channels, the school has been continuously exploring high-quality cooperative projects and has established an undergraduate exchange project of “Double Degrees Joint Project of Economic Statistics and Actuarial Science” with Towson University. In July 2017, the school launched a summer exchange project with Towson University and seven students participated in it. Additionally, several joint projects for postgraduates and doctoral students are under discussion.

2. Awards 

In recent years, the students have won many first, second, and third prizes in the China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling and the “Challenge Cup” and gained more than 200 first, second, and third prizes in various academic competitions throughout the province. Over the years, the “Huachuang Cup” Market Survey and Analysis Competition, organized by the school, has attracted nearly 300 teams from more than 10 universities around the province. Additionally, the employment rate of graduates has ranked at the top of the list in the university for many years and the enrollment rate has been ranked first in JUFE.

3. Student Publications and Patents

In the past five years, the students have published more than 20 papers in authoritative journals in China and abroad, won more than 40 projects supported by the provincial special funds for graduate innovation, participated in and completed more than 200 tutor’s projects, and established over 20 university-level graduate innovation projects and more than 30 undergraduate innovation projects.

4. Outstanding Alumni

Since its inception, the school has provided a large number of talents for society, and many alumni have even become elites in political, business, and academic circles.

Yu Liegui graduated from Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics in 1982 with a doctoral degree in Industrial Statistics and was once the deputy director of the State Administration of Science, Technology, and Industry for National Defense.

Wu Xiaoqiu, a famous economist, is the founder of China's securities theory. In 1983, he graduated from the Department of Planning and Statistics of Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics and obtained a bachelor's degree in economics.

Gao Sumei graduated from the major of Statistics at JUFE in 1984 and is now the president of Beijing Zhongshi Dongsheng Culture Media Co., Ltd.

Wang Ping graduated from the major of National Economic Planning of the School of Statistics in 1983 and is now the Party secretary and director of Jiangxi Local Taxation Bureau.

Yuan Guangrui graduated from the major of National Economic Planning of the School of Statistics in 1985 and is currently the secretary of the leading Party group and director of Tianjin Finance Bureau.

Chen Shuguang graduated from the major of Industrial Statistics of the School of Statistics in 1982 and is now the deputy general manager of China Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Group.

Ao Huicheng graduated from the major of National Economic Planning of the School of Statistics in 1983 and is now the chairman and Party secretary of China Banknote Printing and Minting Corporation.

VI. Teaching and Research Achievements

In recent years, the school has made remarkable achievements in teaching, research, and serving the local economy. The school has undertaken more than 200 national, provincial, and ministerial research projects and horizontal projects. It has also established a national-level experimental teaching demonstration center “Economic Management and Entrepreneurship Simulation Experimental Teaching Center”-Computer Aided Telephone Investigation (CATI) Laboratory.

“Falling in Love with Statistics”was approved as a national open video course and the textbook Statistics has won both the first and second prizes of Excellent Textbooks for Higher Education in Jiangxi Province. The school’s teachers have compiled six textbooks about statistics and the course “Statistics” has been approved as a provincial excellent resource-sharing course. The “Teaching Practice Program of Statistics” won the first prize in the Supporting Practical Teaching Program of the National Business Education Practice Teaching Competition and the course of “Easy Learning of Statistics” was rated as anational excellent open online course in 2018.

In the past five years, the teachers of the school have presided over more than 50 national-level projects (under research or completed), won over 10 provincial and ministerial awards and published more than 200 papers, among which more than 40 have been published in international and domestic authoritative journals. The total funding for various research projects reaches nearly 30 million yuan. In 2019 alone, the school established 11 national-level research projects, published more than 40 authoritative papers, and undertook 16 provincial projects as well as 5 horizontal projects of various types. The total funding for various research projects was more than 10 million yuan.

 

VII. International Cooperation and Exchange

In recent years, the school has attached great importance to international cooperation and exchange, and has achieved good results, mainly as follows:

(1) The schoolofficially introduced six full-time overseas returnees with doctoral degrees, accommodatingly introduced professors from famous American universities, and sent four teachers abroad for further study. In recent years, more than 10 faculty members have visited prestigious universities in the USA, the UK, Australia, Brazil, and other countries for at least six months. In addition, more than 10 teachers have gone abroad to attend various academic conferences.  

(2) From 2017 to 2019, the school enrolled 14 overseas exchange students.

(3) From 2016 to 2019, six foreign students were admitted to our school.

(4) The school actively learns educational concepts, teaching methods, teaching management models, and evaluation methods from world-class universities. In terms of talent training programs and course offerings, the school gains experience from their outstanding practices and constantly promotes the reform of the talent training mode.
