I. Overview

The School of Finance, founded in 2003, has the only doctoral program of Finance within Jiangxi Province and it also offers the master’s program of Finance and the professional master’s programs of Master of Finance and Master of Insurance. The school has four teaching departments, namely the Department of Finance, the Department of Investment, the Department of Financial Engineering, and the Department of Risk Management and Insurance. Finance became one of the first batch of specialty majors in Jiangxi province in 2002 and was rated as the key discipline of Jiangxi province during the periods of the Tenth Five-Year Plan and Eleventh Five-Year Plan. It was also awarded as part of the second batch of key master’s programs in Jiangxi province in 2006 and the first batch of prominent specialties of the Ministry of Education in 2007. In the comprehensive evaluation of majors of Jiangxi province in 2017, Finance and Insurance were tied for first place. In 2019, Finance was approved as the national first-class undergraduate major and Insurance as the Jiangxi provincial first-class undergraduate major.

The school has under its umbrella four research institutions, including the International Institute of Financial Management, the Research Center for Science, Technology and Finance, the Research Center for Financial Technology and Supervision, and the Research Center for Securities and Futures. In December 2017, the Institute of Modern Finance, established under the joint efforts of Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics and Renmin University of China, was affiliated to the School of Finance.

 

II. Faculty

The school currently has 62 full-time teachers including 19 professors and 17 associate professors and the proportion of teachers with doctorates accounts for 70%. There are 3 experts enjoying the special government allowances of the State Council, 1 nationally renowned teacher, 2 provincially renowned teachers, 1 winner of the Jiangxi Outstanding Contribution Talent Award, 1 leading talent of the Jiangxi Talents 555 Project, 5 young and middle-aged academic leaders of higher education institutions in Jiangxi province, 2 talents of the Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project in Jiangxi Province, 2 leading talents in philosophy and social sciences of higher education institutions in Jiangxi province, and 1 teacher with a national achievement award for returnees. In addition, 4 visiting professors and 1 foreign professor have been recruited.

2. Introduction of Departments

(1) Department of Finance (Finance): Formerly known as the Department of Money and Banking, the Department of Finance is one of the earliest formed departments of the School of Finance and offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs. The course “International Finance” became a national excellent online development course in 2018, and its research achievements and teaching materials have won many awards at national, provincial, and ministerial levels.

(2) Department of Investment (Investment): With a long history, the predecessor to the Department of Investment was the Securities Investment Department of the School of Finance. The course Securities Investment Theory and Practice became the first batch of national excellent resource-sharing courses in 2016. In recent years, teachers from throughout the department have published dozens of high-quality academic papers in important journals such as the Journal of Financial Research and the Economic Research Journal and have completed a great number of national, provincial, and ministerial projects as well as projects entrusted by the Nanchang Municipal Government, enterprises, and public institutions. Policy proposals put forward have received positive remarks from provincial and municipal leaders on numerous occasions.

(3) Department of Financial Engineering (Financial Engineering): The Department of Financial Engineering was established in June 2016 along with the establishment of the Financial Engineering major. In recent years, teachers from the department have published 30-plus papers in SSCI and SCI and more than 40 papers in well-known domestic journals such as Management World andthe Journal of Management Sciences in China and earned 11 projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, as well as over 20 provincial and ministerial projects.

(4) Department of Risk Management and Insurance (Insurance): The predecessor to the Department of Risk Management and Insurance was the Insurance Department, which was founded in 1992. There are 11 full-time teachers(containing ten teachers with doctorates and four teachers studied abroad before) in the department, including two professors, three associate professors and four master supervisors. The Insurance major ranked first in the undergraduate teaching comprehensive evaluation of Jiangxi province in 2017 and was approved as a first-class major in Jiangxi province in 2019. In recent years, faculty members have published more than ten papers in SSCI/SCI journals including the Journal of Empirical Finance, Economic Modelling, Communications in Statistics,and Southwest China as well as more than ten papers in well-known authoritative journals including the Journal of Financial Research, the Economic Research Journal, China Economic Quarterly,and Statistical Research. In addition, the department has gained five projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Social Science Foundation of China as well as over 20 provincial and ministerial projects.

3. Talent Cultivation Goals

(1) Finance: This program aims to cultivate innovative and entrepreneurial talents in finance who have an overall development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, and aesthetics, meet the needs of socio-economic development, and possess the basic knowledge of finance as well as the basic theories and skills of risk management. They will be able to engage in relevant work in enterprises, public institutions, financial supervision departments, and financial institutions involving banking, securities, insurance, trust, and investment, while demonstrating the qualities of Honesty, Vitality, Integrity, and Tenacity”.

(2) Investment: This program aims to cultivate applied, compound, and international senior investment management professionals with a global perspective who systematically master investment knowledge and theories, possess professional skills in investment practices, have strong social adaptability, are competent in the  investment management of public institutions, financial institutions including securities companies, fund companies, trust companies, futures companies, financial leasing companies and asset management companies, as well as economic management departments and financial supervision departments of governments at all levels, and hold strong organizational, decision-making, management, and collaboration capabilities.

(3) Financial Engineering: This program aims to train innovative and entrepreneurial talents in financial engineering who have an overall development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, and aesthetics, meet the needs of socio-economic development, possess the basic knowledge of economy, finance, management, and law, own the basic theories of finance, the basic principles and  techniques of financial engineering as well as the basic skills of quantitative analysis and computer technology, are able to engage in financial engineering in commercial banks, securities companies, financial departments of enterprises, and economic management departments of governments at all levels, and have the qualities of Honesty, Vitality, Integrity, and Tenacity”.

(4) Insurance: This program aims to train innovative and entrepreneurial talents in insurance who have an overall development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, and aesthetics, meet the needs of socio-economic development, possess a solid base knowledge of insurance and insurance investment, master proficient insurance skills, are competent in risk management and insurance for insurance supervision departments, insurance companies, insurance intermediaries, financial groups, enterprise groups, public institutions, media, and relevant economic departments, and have the qualities of Honesty, Vitality, Integrity, and Tenacity”.

(5) Finance (FRM): This program aims to train innovative and entrepreneurial talents in financial risk management with an international vision who have an overall development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, and aesthetics, meet the needs of socio-economic development, master a good mathematical foundation, relatively solid financial knowledge, a strong capability to update their knowledge, and social adaptability, are able to engage in risk management and actuarial risk in the financial industry and social security institutions, are capable of handling risk management and consulting services in government agencies, enterprises, as well as public institutions, and have the qualities of Honesty, Vitality, Integrity, and Tenacity”.

4. Talent Cultivation Features

(1) Finance: Aiming at training innovative and entrepreneurial talents in finance with the qualities of “honesty, excellence, integrity and perseverance” and emphasizing the cultivation of an international vision, this school has established a multi-level practical teaching system centered on the cultivation of innovation and entrepreneurship capabilities and formed an internationalization-oriented open talent training model in accordance with market demand.

(2) Investment: Relying on the discipline advantages of economics and management, this school focuses on financial investment, takes physical investment into account, and attaches great importance to the organic integration of theoretical knowledge and practical capability as well as internationalization and localization.

 (3) Financial Engineering: This school focuses on the combination of theoretical knowledge and practical capability as well as finance and engineering, and pays attention to the cultivation of forward-looking talents with global strategic thinking and the ability to solve practical financial problems.

(4) Insurance: Centering on the cultivation of innovation and entrepreneurship capabilities, this school aims to train versatile and international talents in the background of financial institutions in accordance with market demand through the establishment of a multi-level practical teaching system.

(5) Finance (FRM): Based on the FRM exam and supplemented with fully English textbooks, this school emphasizes the cultivation of students’ international vision, comprehensive quality, and solid theoretical foundation, the improvement of research ability and the capability to pass the national postgraduate entrance examination, and the training of practical teaching and hands-on skills relying on practical activities.

5. Length of Schooling and Awarding of Degrees

The standard length of schooling for undergraduates is generally four years, with a flexible learning period of 3-6 years. Students who complete the required credits and meet the graduation requirements shall be issued a diploma. Students who meet the degree requirements under the national regulations shall be awarded a bachelor's degree in economics.

IV. Talent Cultivation Achievements

1. Joint Talent Cultivation Projects

(1) The School of Finance, the Joint Institute for Commercial Paper of JUFE and BOJJ, and the Bank of Jiujiang have established a practice base for joint cultivation of graduates.

(2) The school owns a joint cultivation project with the University of Missouri.

(3) The school owns a joint cultivation project with the University of Nevada.

(4) The school owns a student exchange and cooperation project with the Department of Finance, National Central University.

2. Awards 

(1) The school won multiple national first prizes in the ICBC Cup National College Student Bank Product Creative Design Competition, special and first prizes in the CFFEX Cup National College Student Financial and Derivative Knowledge Competition, first prize in the Internet Financial Application Innovation Competition, and first prize in the National Insurance Product Creative Design Competition. In the past five years, it has received more than 660 awards at the provincial level and above.

(2) In the past five years, our students have established more than 300 projects including an innovation and entrepreneurship training project for college students, summer research projects of the China Financial Education Development Foundation and China Insurance Institute, etc.

VI. International Cooperation and Exchange

The school currently has five returned doctors and one foreign teacher. Many teachers visit abroad every year and at the same time, well-known overseas scholars are invited as visiting professors to give lectures in our school. There are currently six foreign students, including four doctoral students and two master students.

The school has launched a number of measures to support undergraduate students to participate in overseas exchanges and such short-term exchange projects as summer study tours, the Sino-Korean youth exchange project, overseas summer camp, etc. In recent years, summer internship projects in Hong Kong have achieved good results. Additionally, the school encourages sophomores and juniors to take language tests and reduces or waives the entry fees for students with excellent scores in language tests. The number of undergraduates who win the international exchange project for excellent undergraduates of CSC and go abroad to attend international academic conferences has been increasing year by year. Every year, numerous undergraduates are admitted to the graduate programs of famous universities in Europe and the United States.

The school has also established extensive academic exchanges and educational cooperation relations with research institutions, academic groups, and domestic and foreign famous universities including Australian National University, the University of Missouri, and the University of Nevada. The degree of internationalization is constantly improving.
