I. Overview

Formerly known as the Department of Trade Economy in 1958 and the Department of International Trade in 1995, the School of International Trade and Economics was established in July 1998 and gained its current name in June 2009. The school has four departments, namely the Department of International Trade, the Department of Trade Economics, the Department of International Business, and the Department of E-Commerce.

Over the past 60 years, focusing on the overall development goal of building a top-notch university of finance and economics with solid foundation, distinctive characteristics, high satisfaction, and world-renowned reputation and aiming at the cultivation of entrepreneurial economic and trade talents, all faculty members have carried forward the idea of running a school with an open mind, and have continuously improved the discipline system of international trade and the specialty structure, cultivated academic teams, and actively promoted international development.

 

II. Faculty

The school has a faculty pool of 64, with 51 full-time lecturers, including 8 professors, 33 associate professors, 46 teachers with doctorates (including 9 overseas returnees), 6 doctoral supervisors, and 41 master supervisors. Moreover, 35 guest professors and 1 foreign professor have been recruited.

2. Introduction of Programs

International trade has been a key discipline in Jiangxi province during the periods of the “Tenth Five-Year Plan” and the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan”, and international trade and economics is a program directly managed by the Ministry of Education and a brand major of Jiangxi Higher Education. In 2018, international trade and economics won first place in the comprehensive evaluation in undergraduate colleges and universities and was awarded as the first-class undergraduate program in Jiangxi province. According to the 2016 Evaluation Report of Chinese University Students and Majors published by the Research Center of China Science Evaluation (RCCSE), the China Education Quality Evaluation Center of Wuhan University and the Network of Science and Education Evaluation in China, international trade and economics was rated five stars, ranking 10th among 540 colleges and universities offering the program in China. In the major ranking list released by theAiruishen Alumni Network in 2018, international business ranked third in China.

3. Talent Cultivation Goals

The school will take big business studies as its development direction, the function of China's business system as an important reference for running the school, internationalization as the feature, domestic and foreign trade as the core, foreign economy and investment as the support, and the international class of international business, the Sino-foreign joint training programs for master students, foreign-aid training programs, and international academic cooperation as the important breakthrough point of international education, striving to form a business ecosystem with the integration of Chinese and foreign features and the coordinated development of “undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs”. The school aims at cultivating high-level, applied, and compound professionals in international business with a comprehensive development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, and aesthetics, a solid foundation of economic theory, systematic international trade expertise, and strong research and practical capabilities in international trade-related fields.

4. Talent Cultivation Features

Focusing on the goal of talent cultivation, the school strives to establish a business school with absolute advantages in Jiangxi, distinctive characteristics in central China, and influential discipline directions nationwide.

5. Length of Schooling and Awarding of Degrees

Undergraduates:

The full-time length of schooling is four years.

Postgraduates: 

The standard length of schooling for full-time postgraduates is three years, with a flexible learning period of 2-4 years. The first three semesters are course based for postgraduates, and the fourth, fifth, and sixth semesters are for social research, thesis writing, and oral defense.

The minimum length of schooling for postgraduates is two years. Postgraduate students with excellent grades can apply for graduation after 2 or 2.5 years with the consent of their tutors, but they must submit a graduation application to the Graduate School within six months before the expected graduation time.

Doctoral Students:

The standard length of schooling is three years. Those who do not graduate on time due to special reasons may apply for extension of the study period, but the longest cumulative study time at the school shall not exceed six years.

6. Core Courses

The school has one provincial-level bilingual teaching demonstration course of Business Negotiation, two provincial-level excellent courses of International Trade and International Trade Practice, and two university-level excellent courses of International Marketing and Introduction to China's Foreign Trade.

 

V. Teaching and Research Achievements

Faculty members of our school are committed to scientific research and emphasize the benign interaction between research and teaching. There are four research teams specializing in international price of commodities, trade cost and environment-friendly trade development, enterprise internationalization and open economy, as well as international comparison of low-carbon economy. From 2011 to 2018, the school has undertaken a total of 23 projects supported by the National Social Science Foundation of China and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and finished more than 100 provincial and ministerial projects and horizontal projects. Additionally, the teachers have published more than 40 books and over 50 papers in such authoritative journals as Social Sciences in China, Economic Research Journal, The Journal of World Economy, and Finance and Trade Economics and 70-plus papers in international journals. The total research funding is nearly 20 million yuan.

 

VI. International Cooperation and Exchange

At present, the school has chiefly signed a substantive cooperation agreement with the University of Lincoln in the UK. In addition, upon contact with Dr. Liu Yi of our school, a cooperation agreement was signed with Kyung Hee University in Korea in December 2014.
