On November 14th, JUFE's distinguished visiting professor, Jiang Jiming, attended the 31st Morris Hansen Lecture as the keynote speaker and was invited to deliver an academic report on Model Selection and Its Important Role in Sampling Surveys.

The Morris Hansen Lecture, established by the Washington Statistical Society (WSS) in 1990, is to commemorate the pioneering contributions of the renowned statistician, Morris Hansen, to sampling surveys and related statistical methods. The main format of the Morris Hansen Lecture is to invite only one outstanding keynote speaker each year to lecture on an important topic of wide interest, with two individuals serving as discussion panelists.
This year's Morris Hansen Lecture was held on November 14th at the Jefferson Auditorium in the South Building of the US Department of Agriculture, which was lectured by JUFE’s distinguished visiting Professor Jiang Jiming. Professor Jiang divided his report into six sections, including Introduction, Statistical modeling in surveys, and Model selection, and delivered a lecture on the topic of Model Selection and Its Important Role in Surveys.

Jiang Jiming is the head of the Department of Statistics at the University of California, Davis, and a distinguished visiting professor at JUFE. His research areas include mixed effects models, small area estimation, big data analysis, biostatistics, statistical asymptotic theory, etc. He has published more than 100 papers in top statistical journals and has authored five monographs. He has served as an editor for top international statistical journals such as AoS and JASA. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American Statistical Association (ASA), and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS), as well as an Elected Member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI). In 1998, he received the Outstanding Statistical Application Award from the ASA, and in 2015, he was awarded the Alumni Achievement Award from NISS.
