Academician Chen Songqi Joined JUFE as Chief Scientist of the Statistics Discipline

On the morning of February 23rdAcademician Chen Songqi was appointed as the chief scientist of the Statistics discipline at Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics. 

Guo Jiezhong, Director General of the Jiangxi Education Department, Liu Hansong, Second-level Inspector of the Provincial Party Organization Department, Lu Fucai, chairman of JUFE, and Deng Hui, President of JUFE, attended the ceremony, while Gong Jianfei, Deputy Chairman of JUFE, presided over the ceremony. More than 300 faculty staff and student representatives participated in the ceremony.

Guo Jiezhong warmly welcomed Chen Songqi's appointment as the chief scientist of the Statistics discipline at JUFE. In his speech, he stated that education, technology, and talent are the fundamental and strategic supports for the comprehensive construction of a modern country, and the modernization of talent support for the strategy of rejuvenating the country through science and education. This is also a long-term task for Jiangxi's education now and in the future. In recent years, the Statistics discipline at JUFE has made significant achievements in building first-class disciplines. Academician Chen Songqi's appointment as the chief scientist of the Statistics discipline has injected powerful impetus into the development of this field at JUFE and provided new hopes for its future development.

Guo Jiezhong pointed out in his speech that the development of academic disciplines is a comprehensive reflection of the strength of education and scientific research. At the same time, academic disciplines also play a significant role. Academician Chen Songqi's appointment as the chief scientist has further strengthened the strength of the Statistics discipline at JUFE and played a good role in promoting the future development of the Statistics discipline. The overall improvement of the Statistics discipline can have an important driving force for other disciplines at JUFE.

 

Lu Fucai, chairman of JUFE, presented the certificate of appointment and a souvenir to Academician Chen Songqi.

President Deng Hui warmly welcomed and sincerely thanked Academician Chen Songqi on behalf of JUFE. He believed the appointment is a key measure and important support for promoting the construction of double first-class universities of JUFE and even in Jiangxi Province. This will inject strong impetus for the future development of JUFE. JUFE will also provide necessary support and guarantee for Academician Chen by equipping him with a competent academic research team.

Academician Chen Songqi delivered an enthusiastic speech at the ceremony. He expressed his great pleasure to join the statistical team of JUFE and to contribute to the development of statistics and data science for the scientific and economic development of Jiangxi together with his colleagues.

He pointed out that statistics involves data collection, modeling, analysis and other aspects, and has been deeply integrated into digital and intelligent technology. It is a universal key that can help us solve various scientific problems. Statistics and data science have great potential to enhance the overall level of digital economic development in Jiangxi.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of JUFE. With generations of efforts of JUFE, it has become a well-known domestic university of finance and economics. Its statistics discipline is actively building a key laboratory for finance and data science and striving to achieve breakthroughs in major platforms. The discipline has so far achieved good results in teaching, research, social services, and talent cultivation.

After the appointment ceremony, an academic seminar was held, and Academician Chen Songqi gave a report entitled High Spatio-Temporal Resolution Economic Data Set and Model Construction. Professor Luo Liangqing, the chief professor of the statistics school, presided over the seminar.

On the afternoon of the 22nd, Academician Chen Songqi held a symposium with young teachers of the School of Statistics, during which young teachers and the academician shared their research fields and directions. Ping Weiying, the dean of the School of Statistics, and the vice deans Guo Lu and Liu Xiaohui respectively introduced the overall situation of the school and the construction of the key laboratory for finance and data science.

Appointing Academician Chen Songqi as the chief scientist of the statistics discipline of JUFE is a significant breakthrough in its continuous promotion of high-level leading talents and the comprehensive implementation of the strategies of strengthening the province with talents and strengthening the school with talents. It also contributes to the efforts of making Jiangxi an important first choice for talents in the world.

Chen Songxi, a professor at Peking University, was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2021. He is currently the executive director of the Chinese Society of Statistics, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a fellow of the American Statistical Association, a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and the scientific secretary of the Bernoulli Society. He was also selected as one of the top 2% scientists in the world by Stanford University's 2020 global list. He has received numerous awards, including the Outstanding Research Award from Iowa State University, the 7th Li Yining Research Award, and the first prize in Natural Science from the Ministry of Education in 2017.

Academician Chen Songxi's research mainly focuses on high-dimensional data statistical analysis, environmental statistics, nonparametric statistical methods, and other fields. Starting from the major demands of national air pollution prevention and control, he has made cutting-edge interdisciplinary achievements in the field of mathematical geophysics, providing scientific methods for accurate measurement of pollution emissions and evaluation of atmospheric governance effects. Since 2014, he has been conducting statistical analysis on China's air pollution and has proposed an air quality assessment method that removes meteorological interference and a man-made efforts-weather conditions index. He has led several major and key projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, such as the Air Quality Statistical Diagnosis Model, and has published more than 110 papers in international academic journals.
