2013 Overseas Students Teaching Seminar Held

To improve the management of non-degree education for international students and the quality of teaching, on December 20th, 2013 Overseas Students Teaching Seminar was held at meeting room of overseas students building. The seminar is aimed at taking a broad view over the future of international students’ education in JUFE, updating and improving the teaching and management, and better cultivating short-term students. Dr. Xiao Long, director of OICE, and more than 30 teachers of professional courses, language and culture courses attended the seminar. Besides, Dr. Wu Hui, associate professor, from Jiangxi Normal University was specially invited to share experience in teaching foreign students Chinese. At the beginning, Mr. Gao Yangsong introduced general situation of teaching in 2013. The report includes different students’ study levels, countries they are from and course selection and faculties’ background. Teachers present got a comprehensive understanding of teaching situation visa Gao’s this report. Then, Dr. Wu Hui, associate professor, from Jiangxi Normal University shared experience in teaching foreign students Chinese. Wu said teaching Chinese as a foreign language is currently faced with new challenges with its gradually transformation towards popularity and application. According to Wu’s former experience, to ensure the quality of teaching quality, teachers should pay attention to the following three steps: before class, teachers should understand teaching environment, outline and difficulties students might meet; during the class, teachers should monitor the whole process and adjust teaching strategy; the end of the semester, teachers sum up experience in time, assess him/herself and give feedback. When it comes to academic course, Dr. Wang Haina, associate professor from School of Finance gave some insight. Wang’s class is very popular among students as his vivid teaching methods and explanation profound theories in simple language. He summarized the past experience and refined out three basic principles of academic class: Questions and Models orientated, Critical Thinking and Team of Discussion and Presentation. As the last item on agenda, Dr. Xiao Long, director of OICE, made closing remarks. Dr. Xiao expressed her sincere appreciation on every teacher’s active participation and hard working in overseas education. She said foreign students’ education, as an indispensible index of internationalization of JUFE, would show a university's international reputation and influence. It is because JUFE has been focused on the importance and urgency of education, JUFE increased investment in developing curriculum, improving dorm facility and broadening recruitment channels. Therefore, we should take full use of existing advantage, resources and relevant national and local government policies to expand students scale, improve the students structure and improve students level. In the end, teachers are devided into two groups according to language and academic curriculum and exchanged opinions and discussed over the problems encountered in teaching and management. Staff from OICE recorded every possible solutions and will improved accordingly in the near future. It is reported that it is the 4th time holding Overseas Students Teaching Seminar. In the expansion of foreign students scale, Office of International Cooperation and Exchange is confronted with many new challenges, difficulties and opportunities, and need this precious opportunity to summarize experience. The success of this conference will lay a good foundation for further short-term students cultivation and management. By WANG Jianglu
