I. Overview

Founded in 2009, the School of Humanities is an integration of the Department of Sociology of the former School of Humanities and the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, the Department of Journalism, and the Department of Communication of the former School of Arts and Communication. Currently, the school consists of four departments (Department of Sociology, Department of Journalism and Communication, Department of Cultural Industry and Department of Chinese Language and Literature) and several research centers (Research Center of Social Work and Social Policy, Research Center of Female Culture, Research Center of Asian-Pacific Economy and Social Development, Research Center of Jiangxi Taoist Culture, Research Center of Jiangxi Social Science Literature and Research Center of Cultural Industry Management).

The school offers relatively complete disciplines. In 2019, it boasted two master’s programs of the first-level disciplines of Sociology and Journalism and Communication, among which Sociology was awarded as a key discipline in Jiangxi province during the period of the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan”. Moreover, the school has been entitled to confer master’s degrees in Social Work as well as Journalism and Communication and was one of the first 33 schools offering the major of Social Work in China.

 

II. Faculty

The school has a strong faculty with a wide range of social influence. In recent years, by vigorously introducing high-level talents, the school has formed a teaching team with a reasonable structure, rigorous academic research, high academic accomplishment, and an innovative and enterprising spirit. The school has a faculty pool of 84, including 13 professors, 17 associate professors, 4 provincial academic leaders, 2 young and middle-aged academic leaders of Jiangxi province, 2 doctoral supervisors, 43 master supervisors, and 49 teachers with doctorates. Among them, Professor Chen Jiaqi is a member of the National Education Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, Professor Yin Zhonghai is the deputy director of the National Rural Social Work Committee and the National Anti-Poverty Social Work Committee, Chen Jiaqi, Zhang Pinliang and Wang Yuqi are members of the Jiangxi Education Steering Committee, Associate Professor Yin Pingjun is a member of the Executive Committee of the Ministry of Civil Affairs and a member of the China Agricultural Research Academic Committee of the Development Research Center of the State Council, Professor Tang Bin is a leading talent in social work in Jiangxi and one of the 100 social workers in China in 2018, and Dr. Zhou Bowen is a member of the Chinese Writers Association and winner of the Bingxin Literature Prize. In order to promote the teaching reform, our school hired Professor Shen Yuan and Professor Liu Shiding of Tsinghua University as leaders of the economic sociology and financial sociology teaching teams.

2. Length of Schooling

        The length of schooling for undergraduates is four years.

The lengths of schooling for academic master students and processional master students are three years and two years respectively.

 

IV. Talent Cultivation Achievements

In recent years, the school has closely followed the strategy of building an internationalized JUFE, promoting the development of study abroad programs and has achieved good results. In 2019, a total of 37 students in our school successfully applied for exchange programs at home and abroad, and 7 graduates went abroad for postgraduate studies at global top 60 well-known universities including Edinburgh University, Bristol University, Monash University, Sydney University, and Melbourne University. Zhang Zhaoyu, graduated from social work in 2013, received a full scholarship from the International Scholarship Council and went to Michigan State University to continue his studies. He currently works for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

In 2019, a total of six innovation and entrepreneurship training projects for college students were recommended as national-level projects, and the quality of the projects reached a new height. Our school organized more than 30 student teams to declare various projects, and more than 100 students participated in the declarations, with a project approval rating exceeding 54%. Among them, a total of 6 projects were established for the college students' innovation and entrepreneurship, 20 projects for the 14th students’ scientific research, and 3 projects for volunteer activities for rural citizens. In 2019, our students applied for one intellectual property software copyright and published 11 papers, including 3 national papers and 8 provincial papers.

In 2019, students won 210 awards, including 6 national group awards, 9 national individual awards, 6 provincial group awards, 4 provincial individual awards, 30 university-level group awards, 66 university-level individual awards, 31 school-level group awards, and 48 school-level individual awards.

Outstanding Alumni:

Sun Kailin, a graduate of the Cultural Industry Management major of the School of Humanities in 2014, joined Beijing Enlight Media Co., Ltd.

Guo Penglei, a graduate of the Chinese Department in 2015, worked at Baicizhan and was responsible for the user operation of Mint Reading.

 Qiu Lingjing majored in Cultural Industry Management in 2015, and is now engaged in the copyright of film and television programs for the video platform iQiyi in China.

 Zhang Junbin majored in Journalism and Communication in 2013 and then joined China Youth Daily.

 Zhou Shanshan majored in Social Work in 2012 and later joined BOC Hong Kong.

 

V. Research Institutions
 ——A Confucius Institute was jointly established by the school and Coventry University in the United Kingdom.
 ——In 2018, the school reached a consensus on cooperative research at Arizona State University, and jointly built the ASU research and experiment base.
 ——The Research Center of Social Work and Social Policy, a university-level research institution, has been established.
 ——Five school-level research centers
 have been established, including the Research Center of Female Culture, the Research Center of Asian-Pacific Economy and Social Development, the Research Center of Jiangxi Taoist Culture, the Research Center of Jiangxi Social Science Literature and the Research Center of Cultural Industry Management.

 

VI. Teaching and Research Achievements

In recent years (2016-2019), the school has undertaken and successfully completed 12 projects of the National Social Science Foundation of China and carried out 7 projects of the Ministry of Education and the National Committee for the Collation and Research of Ancient Books in Institutions of Higher Learning. Two teachers’ works were funded by the National Publishing Foundation.

In the past three years (2016-2019), the school has won more than 11 awards including the Jiangxi Outstanding Achievement Award in Social Sciences and the Jiangxi Teaching Achievement Award. In addition, the faculty members of the school have published a total of 43 books (including translations) and more than 150 papers (including 11 authoritative papers) in core journals or above.

 

VII. International Cooperation and Exchange

International Cooperation Projects:

JUFE and Coventry University in the UK are solid international partners. Every summer, the school actively carries out summer camp activities with the Confucius Institute at Coventry University.

Internationalization of Teaching:

1. The School of Humanities has been conducting normalized cooperation with overseas social work organizations including Caritas Hong Kong since 2008.

2. In order to cultivate speciality literacy, the school sends students majoring in International Education in Chinese Language to Thailand for internships.

3. Three students majoring in Sociology from JUFE’s Class of 2018 went to Arizona State University for a 3-month short-term exchange last year.

4. Chen Zhenqi, a postgraduate student majoring in Communication Studies, went to Artevelde University in Belgium for a one-year exchange last year.

5. In June 2013, the school joined the International Social Work Education Alliance.

Internationalization of Teachers:

1. The number of teachers that have studied abroad from our school (more than 6 months) is 25, accounting for 39% of the total number of full-time teachers in the school.

2. The school has two full-time faculty members with doctoral degrees from Johns Hopkins University and Osaka University of Economics.

Internationalization of Research:

Many teachers of the school have co-edited works with famous Chinese and foreign scholars and published several high-level papers.
