I. Overview

Formerly known as the Economic Law Teaching and Research Section of the Department of Economics in 1984, the Department of Economic Law was established in March 1995 and then renamed the Department of Law in May 1999. In September 2001, the School of Law was established on the basis of the Department of Law. Upholding the motto of “Virtuous, Law-abiding, Fair, Righteous, and Lofty”, the School of Law attaches great importance to the cultivation of rule-of-law talents with solid legal theoretical foundation, proficient legal practice ability, and comprehensive development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, and aesthetics.

The school began to enroll undergraduates in Law in 1993. It was approved the program of Master of Laws in 1998, the Juris Master program in 2003, the doctoral program of the first-level discipline of Law in 2018, and the postdoctoral research station of the first-level discipline of Law in 2019. The school has formed a complete legal education system combining undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and postdoctoral programs in Jiangxi Province.

 

II. Faculty

The school currently has 77 faculty members with 66 full-time teachers, including 22 professors and 21 associate professors. 43 associate professors and above account for 65.15% of full-time teachers while teachers with doctorates and doctoral students make up 86.63%. Moreover, it includes 10 doctoral supervisors, 51 master supervisors, 42 part-time professors, 20 guest professors and 1 foreign professor.

2. Talent Cultivation Goals

The school bends itself to the cultivation of applied and compound legal talents with an international vision, critical thinking, rule of law awareness, innovation capability, solid theoretical knowledge, and practical skills in law.

 

IV. Talent Cultivation Achievements

1. Joint Talent Cultivation Projects

Xu Dou, an undergraduate student majoring in law, went to the School of Law of Zhejiang University of Finance and Economics to study in the second semester of the 2018-2019 school year. In the past two years, the school has sent a total of 30 students to study at Saint Mary's University in the United States during the summer vacation. In 2019, two graduate students studied at the university for three months.

2. Awards 

Undergraduates and graduates have actively participated in various competitions and achieved great results, such as the third prize of the 17th Lee and Li Cup National College Moot Court Competition, the special award among the college groups of the 3rd Learning the Constitution and Interpreting the Constitution Competition for College Students in Jiangxi Province, the first prize of the 9th National Law Education Forum in Finance and Economics Colleges and Universities and the Commerce and Finance Cup National Law Professional Skills Competition in Finance and Economics Colleges and Universities, etc.

3. Student Publications and Patents

Undergraduate student Ma Jinfei obtained the software copyrights as the first inventor of the dating platform of Lymb-Table, the legal service platform of Ming Hao Fa Bao, and the poverty alleviation e-commerce platform of Huinong E.

4. Graduate Cultivation

Since 1999, the school has enrolled more than 1,600 postgraduate students and 44 doctoral students, awarding more than 1,500 master’s degrees and 16 doctoral degrees. Due to the high-quality graduate teaching, excellent results have been achieved. More than 40 postgraduate students have been admitted to prestigious universities. With strong abilities in academic research, the postgraduate students have published over 40 papers in core academic journals or above, and 24 provincial-level projects have been approved. After graduation, they mainly become engaged as lawyers, judges, prosecutors, legal consuls, and college teachers.

5. Outstanding Alumni

The school has cultivated a multitude of outstanding rule of law talents for courts, procuratorates, government agencies, law firms, enterprises, and public institutions. Xue Xinwei, an undergraduate student of the Class of 1998, was rated among the Top Ten Public Prosecutors in China, more than 130 alumni, including Lin Xiaochun and Hao Lingyun, became senior partners of law firms and 80-plus students have served as chief judges of courts at all levels as well as chief prosecutors.

VI. Teaching and Research Achievements

In recent years, faculty members of the school have earned 30 major projects, key projects, and general projects supported by the National Social Science Foundation of China and over 80 provincial and ministerial projects, and have published more than 60 academic monographs and over 30 papers in such journals as Social Sciences in China, Chinese Journal of Law, and China Legal Science. They also have won more than 30 Humanities and Social Sciences Awards of the Ministry of Education as well as Jiangxi Outstanding Achievement Awards, and received positive remarks on more than 10 occasions from provincial and ministerial leaders. Additionally, the teachers have won the first prize of the fifteenth batch of Jiangxi Teaching Achievement Awards for Higher Education, launched provincial-level excellent open online courses, and published multiple textbooks.

 

VII. International Cooperation and Exchange

The number of teachers who have studied abroad is 25, accounting for 38% of the total number of full-time teachers in the school. The school has established a good cooperative relationship with the Law School of Saint Mary's University in the United States and sends students to study in the United States each summer. Additionally, it hired Gregory Allen Brubaker, an American juris doctor, as a specialized teacher on September 1, 2017 and has worked together with him into a third employment period. Professor Robert H. Hu of Saint Mary’s University in the USA and Professor Jeffrey Ellis Thomas of the University of Missouri, also in the USA have been invited to give lectures. Robert H. Hu has been recruited to provide short-term teaching for students as a visiting professor.
