I. Overview

The predecessor of the School of Accounting of Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics was the Department of Financial Accounting. The first head of the department was Professor Qiu Zongshun, a famous accountant in China. In 1998, the School of Accounting was established on the basis of the former Department of Financial Accounting and the Department of Financial Management and has now become the largest school of learning and teaching.

The school now has four teaching departments and centers, including the Department of Accounting, the Department of Financial Management, the CPA Education Center and the Computerized Accounting Education Center, and four research institutions, including the Accounting Development Research Center, the International Accounting and Finance Research Center, the Corporate Finance Research Institute, and the Government Asset Research Center. In addition, it owns four administrative agencies, including the Office of Party and Government Affairs, the Office of Student Affairs, the Office of Scientific Research and Postgraduate Affairs, and the Office of Academic Affairs.

Through the unremitting efforts of the past generations of accountants, the school has a complete platform of disciplines, with three levels of bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs. It was granted the right to confer the master's degree of accounting in 1985, the doctoral degree of accounting in 2006, the professional master’s degree of accounting in 2007 and the professional master’s degree of auditing in 2011. The first-level discipline of business administration affiliated to accounting gained a doctoral program and postdoctoral research station in 2009. In 2018, MPAcc obtained class A through the quality authentication of AAPEQ.

 

II. Faculty

The school currently has 97 full-time teachers, including 30 professors, 30 associate professors, 9 doctoral supervisors, and 62 master supervisors. More than 60% of full-time faculty members have doctorates. Among the teachers, there are 1 nationally renowned teacher, 4 teachers enjoying the special government allowances of the State Council, 1 member of the China National MPAcc Education Steering Committee, 1 candidate of the Training Project of Famous Accountants of the Ministry of Finance, 1 expert consultant in Management Accounting of the Ministry of Finance, 3 national leading talents in Accounting (academic) of the Ministry of Finance, 3 candidates of the “Jiangxi Talents 555 Project”, 7 young and middle-aged academic leaders of higher education institutions in Jiangxi province, 4 famous teachers of higher education institutions in Jiangxi province, 3 first-tier and second-tier talents of the Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project in Jiangxi Province, and 1 Young Jinggang Scholar of Jiangxi province.

2. Talent Cultivation Goals

The school aims to cultivate innovative and entrepreneurial talents who have a comprehensive development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, and aesthetics, meet the needs of socialist modernization, own solid professional knowledge and ability in accounting, auditing, economics, management, and law, master practical skills and a certain level of foreign language and computer application skills, possess an international vision, characteristics of the times and a pioneering spirit, are able to engage in accounting and financial management in enterprises, public institutions, financial institutions, and government departments at various levels, can continue to study at universities and research institutions at home and abroad, and have the qualities of Honesty, Vitality, Integrity, and Tenacity”.

3. Talent Cultivation Features

. “Solid Foundation, Broad Employment, In-depth Practice, and Strong Ability”. Placing emphasis on the integration of economics, management and other disciplines, and strengthening the application of basic knowledge in the cultivation of compound talents under the large-scale enrollment model. Starting from the goal of promoting employment, the school emphasizes expanding students’ horizons, improving their hands-on skills and using theoretical knowledge to solve practical problems.

Paying attention to the cultivation of talents in international finance, setting up bilingual courses to achieve the purposes of broadening students' horizons and improving practical ability, conforming to the trends of the times, persisting in the cultivation of high-level talents in management accounting, and delivering versatile financial talents that meet social needs.

. Attaching importance to the cultivation of research and innovation abilities, comprehensive employment guidance, and innovation and entrepreneurship education. Through the personalized training module, the elective courses are set to three types: top-notch, excellent, and innovation and entrepreneurship. According to the development directions of students, the school provides personalized training courses to meet the needs of students' personalized development. Through employment guidance and innovation and entrepreneurship education, it improves the employability and competitiveness of students.

4. Length of Schooling and Awarding of Degrees

The school implements credit-based system and uniformly carries out the basic length of schooling of four years, with a flexible learning period of 3-6 years. Students, who complete all the courses required by the training program and obtain corresponding credits within 3-6 years, shall be awarded a diploma. In the flexible length of schooling, students can minor in the second major or pursue a second academic degree in the school and also have the option to take leave from school for entrepreneurial or practical activities. Students, who complete the required credits and meet the degree requirements within the stipulated length of schooling, shall be awarded a bachelor’s degree in management.

The lengths of schooling for foreign undergraduates, foreign postgraduates, and foreign PhD candidates are four years, two years and three years respectively.

IV. Talent Cultivation Achievements

1. Joint Talent Cultivation Projects

In recent years, the school has signed internship base agreements with more than 60 well-known enterprises such as CRRC Group, Midea Group, Country Garden, Suning Commerce Group, and Ubtech, as well as dozens of accounting firms such as PWC, Deloitte, Shu Lun Pan CPAs, Ruihua, and Pan-China. It also sends more than 200 interns for 1-3 month internships each summer, and the final signing rate of agreements reaches 65% each year.

The average annual signing rate of employment agreements in the school is over 90%, and 19% of graduates are employed in the top 500 well-known enterprises. Additionally, nearly 20% of graduates are successfully enrolled in graduate schools each year, among whom 65% are admitted into well-known universities of the 985/211 projects. Numerous students are enrolled in such well-known universities as Central University of Finance and Economics, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and Xiamen University. In 2019, a total of 176 undergraduate students in the school won the opportunity to study abroad. About 70% of them went to the UK to continue their studies, and more than 50% of the students, with their exceptional results, successfully entered the top 100 prestigious universities in the world, including Yale University, Imperial College London, London School of Economics and Political Science and University of Birmingham.

2. Awards 

In recent years, the school has achieved stable and exemplary results in academic competitions, such as champion and runner-up in the Accounting Debate Competition of Cross-strait Colleges and Universities, champion and runner-up in the IMA Global Management Accounting Case Competition in China, champion of the National Management Accounting Case Competition held by Tsinghua University, runner-up in the National Kang Teng Case Competition held by Wuhan University, runner-up in PWC 24H Case Competition held by Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, runner-up in the QP Case Analysis Competition held by the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants, runner-up in the National Employability Competition for ACCA Students, runner-up in the “Haojiang Cup” Chinese Debate and Speech Contest and first prize in the Accounting Case Competition of China Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Universities. At present, about 150 people from the school have won honors in the national and provincial discipline competitions. The school has established the Sichuang Case Sharing Society to train talents for discipline competitions and at the same time, it also undertakes national case competitions held by IMA and CIMA every year to provide opportunities for students.

3. Student Publications and Patents

The school encourages students to publish papers and gives postgraduate recommendations and rewards for those with high-quality papers. The average number of papers published over the past five years was more than 70. Among them, one was published in a British journal in 2019, and one in Audit Research as the second author, which marked a great breakthrough for the school. In recent years, students have obtained more than 20 patents on average.

4. Graduate Cultivation

The school started enrolling postgraduates in 1985 and became part of the first batch of training sites for the Master of Accounting. It obtained the right to confer the  degree of Master of Professional Accounting (MPAcc) in 2007, the degree of Master of Auditing (MAud) in 2011, and the doctoral degree of Accounting in 2006. The school has obvious professional advantages in China, and has achieved a large number of high-quality research results in the three main research directions of accounting theory and method, auditing theory and method, and corporate financial management in the past five years.

The school aims to cultivate high-quality professionals in accounting who are committed to adapting to the requirements of China's socialist market economy and national innovation, conform to the development requirements of an internationally renowned high-level university of finance and economics with a solid foundation, distinctive characteristics, and high rate of satisfaction, possess systematic professional knowledge and reasonable knowledge structure, and have a strong ability to find, analyze and solve problems.

The school obtained grade B + (top 20%) in the fourth round of discipline evaluation, and MPAcc acquired grade A in quality authentication and grade B in level assessment. In general, graduate education enjoys a high reputation nationwide.

5. Outstanding Alumni

Adhering to the tenet of cultivating entrepreneurial talents with the qualities of “honesty, excellence, integrity, and perseverance”, the school has trained a multitude of outstanding talents for society. Among them, well-known entrepreneurs include Wang Wenjing, president of Yonyou Software Company, Zhou Xingzeng, chairman of Shanghai Jianqiao Group, and Gu Qingwei, chairman of Beijing Dinghan Technology Co., Ltd. Famous scholars include Professor Qin Rongsheng, president and secretary of the Party Committee of Beijing National Accounting Institute, Professor Liu Xianfang, dean of the Business School of New York Institute of Technology in the USA, Professor Xia Donglin in Tsinghua University, Professor Wei Minghai, president of Guangzhou University, and Professor Lin Bin in Sun Yat-sen University. The political elites include Li Rongcan, member of the Standing Committee of the Gansu Provincial Party Committee and secretary of the Lanzhou Municipal Committee, Gan Rongkun, member of the Standing Committee of the Heilongjiang Provincial Party Committee and vice governor of Heilongjiang Province, Dong Xiansheng, member of the Standing Committee of the Hebei Provincial Party Committee and vice governor of Hebei Province, and Gu Huarong, secretary of the leading Party group and director of Jiangxi Provincial Audit Office.

VI. Teaching and Research Achievements

The school has undertaken more than 30 projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Social Science Foundation of China and over 150 provincial and ministerial projects. It has published more than 50 academic works and more than 500 high-level papers in well-known authoritative journals including Management World, Accounting Research, Audit Research, and Xinhua Digest, and won 50-plus provincial and ministerial research achievements.

 

VII. International Cooperation and Exchange

The main feature of international education in our school is the setup of direction classes in cooperation with foreign professional associations. After ten years of development, the direction of ACCA affiliated to accounting, opened in 2004, has formed a very good reputation. In 2014, the school kept pressing forward and in order to meet the needs of the market, it cooperated with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants to open a class of CIMA. In 2016, the school and BPP University signed an agreement for a study abroad program offering organized classes based on the overseas study program of ACCA which can help students to be exempted from ACCA-related courses. At present, it has trained excellent students majoring in ACCA for our school, among whom two achieved an IELTS score of 8 and one applied to Yale University for further study through the project.

With the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school opened a doctoral program for foreign students in 2014 and enrolled the first batch of foreign PhD candidates in September of that year. Up to now, two batches of foreign doctoral students have successfully graduated. In 2016, the school opened a master’s program for foreign students and the first batch of students successfully graduated in July 2018. These postgraduates and PhD candidates are from Pakistan, Tanzania, Madagascar, Sierra Leone, and other friendly countries.

The school encourages and supports teachers to study abroad. At present, teachers with overseas visiting experience account for 31% of the faculty. With the guarantee of excellent teachers, the school offers a large number of English courses and bilingual courses in English and Chinese.

In 2011, the school signed internship base agreements with Hong Kong Prudential and Singapore AIA and dispatched more than 40 students to complete overseas internships for about one month during the summer vacation. The school also sent teachers to learn simultaneously through internship programs. At present, the overseas internship program has become a brand of the School of Accounting.
